Families walking or biking through the high-traffic intersection at University Ave. and Curtis St. at morning drop off will likely notice a difference since the start of the school year. The friendly crossing guard who looked out for us each morning and urged drivers to slow down is no longer there.
In response to an email from third-grade parent Matthew Hirsch, Aaron Dieken in the transportation division at the City of Berkeley's Public Works Department said on Sept. 23 that the city is attempting to hire a new crossing guard for that location.
"I will try to get a temporary person to fill in until we hire someone," Dieken said.
The PTA has offered to work together with the city to arrange for a volunteer crossing guard until the city has someone in place. Please contact us if you can help.
